Detailed Plot:
We meet kindly old puppet maker Geppetto (RAT-A-TAP-TAP) as he is finishing up on his latest puppet, Pinocchio. He is very lonely and wishes he had a child to love (I WISH I HAD A LITTLE BOY). As soon as he falls asleep, the Blue Fairy enters. She has overheard his wish and, since he is a good man, brings Pinocchio to life (IF YOU THINK YOU CAN). Geppetto wakes up and sees the Blue Fairy and his live puppet. He can’t believe his eyes (I LOVE TO DREAM)! She explains to Geppetto that Pinocchio can only turn into a real-live little boy if he uses his imagination and truly believes. Well, Geppetto is a grown-up, it’s been a long time since he’s needed to use his imagination. The fairy gives Geppetto seven days to find his child-like imagination. Geppetto decides that if Pinocchio is to be a real boy, he needs an education. He sends his little puppet to school. Soon we meet he Fox and the Cat (WE’RE THE FOX AND THE CAT), two silly street urchins who are always up to no good. They meet up with Pinocchio (RULES FOR A REAL GOOD BOY) and convince him that the best way for him to be a kid is to skip school (LET’S HAVE SOME FUN) and be really good at being bad. Just as the gang is about to leave, the Blue Fairy appears and catches Pinocchio is a lie. His nose grows and she explains that he must not lie. After she leaves, the Cat and Fox convince Pinocchio that she only said he mustn’t lie– she didn’t say anything about going to school or any other bad behavior. They head off for adventure. Meanwhile, Geppetto has been searching for his puppet (HAVE YOU SEEN HIM). He comes across the Fox and Cat, who are in a panic. Pinocchio has been swallowed by a whale! Geppetto sets off to rescue Pinocchio (HAVE YOU SEEN HIM REPRISE). Suddenly we find Geppetto in the belly of a whale. He finds a doll laying next to him and begins playing with it and talking to it. He has resigned that he’ll never see Pinocchio again when when he discovers his puppet inside the same whale (THE ECHO SONG)! After a bittersweet reunion, the two hear Fox and Cat’s voices. They have come to rescue Geppetto and Pinocchio! After everyone is safely back on land, Geppetto asks the Fox and Cat if they’d like to live with him and Pinocchio. They are overjoyed. The Blue Fairy appears and tells Geppetto that by playing with the doll inside the whale, he began using his imagination again, so she changed Pinocchio into a real little boy (RULES FOR A REAL GOOD BOY FINALE).
